Unit 5 Exhibition

We decided early on in the year that it would be a good idea to explore the possiblity of dispalying our work publicly. We secured a small space on Parnie St and dispalyed all our work for a number of days. Being quite dissapointed with the quaility of my work, i decided not to dispaly my finished project, but instead displayed what i had displayed for the first review of the project, which worked out quite well as it provided a backdrop for live music during the course of the launch night.

Results

No surprise, I failed! Was expecting it, and glad i did. Would have hated to have scraped a pass. At least now i have a chance to go back, figure out where it started going wrong, and make a fresh attempt for the resit.

Found out that a number of students from my unit also failed, which was quite a shock. I'd known for some time my project was behind schedule, but everybody else had quaility work on the walls.

External examination

External examiners were in today to look at a selection of the years work. I was quite worried because my name wasn't on the list to be seen. I was hoping i'd get an oppertunity to speak to them about my work. I've had a few proplems this year but i feel i have learned alot from those mistakes. It could have also been a chance to make myself feel better, might sound a bit lame, but i've been so dedicated this year, maybe too dedicated? I've yet to feel good about what i've done, despite the work thats been put in the end product always seems substanderd.

I've realised my main issue is time management. I worked every hour i could for the last year, i took little time to enjoy myself, despite how long i'd sit working i only actually do a couple of hours. Pulling everything together in the last 3 weeks really proved to me that i can work quickly, that i don't need to sit for day on end. sffrewfaew

Feedback

Got my feedback today, not looking good at all. Really worried about what i'm going to do. I don't think i wan to waste time doing a resit, i don't think i'll learn much from making a bad project look nicer for 40%, but i don't know if i can resit the year, or the project next year? I'll have to wait and see.

Final Review

That was horrible, truely horrible. The feedback was all negative, and it had nothing to do with the drawings or presentation, they just thought it wasn't a great idea, or that i had too many nice ideas and maybe i should have let some go. I don't think i'm gonna pass this one, i kinda hope i don't scrap a pass, its obvious i have some issues to sort out with my design process. i'll just have to wait and see. I'm glad i didn't waste any time on fancy images now ha ha.

on a plus, my friend Angus met me outside my review with a huge flask of fresh made Mojito, perfect way to forget about a bad day.

Week 16 - Final Review all pinned up

Well i've done all i can. Not happy with what i've got, the drawings are very basic and the presentation is quite vauge. There is no detailing whatsoever. I'm quite happy with how hard i worked though, i've been pulling 12 -16 hour day for the last 3 weeks, but despite that i'm still 3 weeks behind with a building thats not been looked at. Finding it hard to be confident about tomorrow, There is alot of nice stuff already on the walls already.

Cutting corners

I had played to create a series of photoshopped images to conceptually display how the village will work, what the spaces will be like and how they will be used and populated. It's obvious now that i'm not going to have the time, so i've had to cut that corner. Instead i've prepared these sketches, hopefully they'll be successful in conveying my thoughts.

Auditorium Diagram

The Auditorium was designed to be as multifunctional as possible. The upper level has tiered seating while the lower level is uninterupted. Additional seating can be provided with the addition of bleachers or small Stool and Table pods, depending on the capacity required or intimacy?

I've also prepared a diagram highlighting the servises in the building

Coming together

I finally have a building, it's rough at the moment, but its something. I happy with how it works but i know its far from perfect. The floor plans are just about finished, due to the size of the building i'll have to print them at 1-500 scale.
I've also drawn up some rough Elevations and sections, i'm hopeing to give them all some sort of photoshop render to highlight the concrete formwork that will be used.

Interim Review

So today i was supposed to have an interim reviewbut i didn't go! Not sure that was the best idea, but to to perfectly honest i was fucking raging with the email i recieved from a tutor. I wrote to both of them explaining that i wouldn't have full plan section elevations, but i did have a clear diagram of the building like discussed at the end of the last tutorial. The email was form the tutor i'd seen at the start of that session, he had obviously not realised what i'd agreed to produce with the other tutor. His email expressed hi worries, which where extremly valid, But i'm not an idiot, i know i'm very far behind, and some of what was written was in no way supportive, infact one statement was extremely patronising.

I hope i don't regret this descision, but i know i was far too upset and angry to face either of them.
Looks like i've got just over 3 weeks to pull together a building and a presentation, nothing like a bit of pressure eh?

Here are some of the diagrams i prepared.

Althought this is not annotated it displays clearly how the massing of the building will work.

Not Happy At All!!!!

Good news or bad news? I don't think there is much good news. Today was the last tutorial, we were told that for friday we should have not only have plan sections and elevations of our buildings, but also that we should have a rough draft of our final presentation which should display all the information that we have covered over the last 12 weeks. Apparenty we will be graded on our presentation only, and the verbal presentation will not count towards our grade which means the presentation should read clearly and display all the key aspects of the project. Kinda daunting considering i've yet to realise a building!!

Spoke to one tutor at the start of the session, wasn't much help. told me i needed to get floor plans ready by the end of the day so i could discuss them with the other tutor. Wasn't the most helpful request considering i've been trying to pull together floor plans for the last 4 weeks! Needless to say by the end of the session i still had nothing.

The next tutor was more helpful. I told him i was stuck so we put the paper away and spent an hour talking about what i was trying to do and spent some time looking at Big.dk. All there projects, no matter how complex have simple diagrams which illustrate the key moves. Having looked at these i've a better idea of how i can put together a diagram and a building.

The interim is on friaday, but he told me have a clear diagram of how the building will work, how the spaces will be arranged in plan and in section. This is far from an ideal postion to be in, but there is not much else i can do.

Week 12 - Starting To Panic!!!!

I've still not got a clear diagram of my building, i don't know what i'm doing wrong, maybe i'm trying to do to much?? I've prepared some quick images to display how the osborne st units might work, but other than that i'm still at the same palce i was a week ago. Think i'm gonna see both tutors today, one at the start, one at the end, hopefully i can pull something together in that few hours?

Possible uses for Osborne St units.

Repairing The Context

I've been strauggling to come up with a cohearant diagram for my building. Can't seem to put all the pieces together. The tutorial yesterday wasn't great, again there is still alot of work today. We discussed factoring in some of the aspects of the village into the venue. Rather than having a huge venue that only fuctions for a couple of hours i was advise to try and incorperate some of the servises and facilities that will be available in the village. Repairing the context of Osborne st seems like solution. Creating a series of multifunctional spaces, similar to the arches of Kings court, which could link into not only the venue but also the festival sight.

Building Concepts

Today i present my concept diagrams for Building. The tutorial went well but it is obvious i have a lot of work to do. I'm kinda worried that i'm not further along, but i thin i have some nice ideas that should come together.

The main ideas for the buidling reamin the same, i want it to act as an entry point to the village, including festival times. I see it becoming an urban landscape, something similar to FOA's Yokohama Ferry Terminal, where the space are hidden underneath the landscape. I want to encourage people to explore the landscape, to use it, to inhabit it. I'm keen to postion the Bar on this upper level.

I want the building to house a dual aspect stage so at festival time the site can benefit from 2 stages, The main stage on top of the Rehearsal and Recording Zone with a back up stage opening up from the rear of the venue.

I intend for the auditorium to hold somewhere between 500 - 1000 people depending on seating arrangements. Opening up the stage to the ouside could potentially double or quadruple the posssible audiance.
