Utopian Dreams

Our performance the unit decided that like the previous projects, the themes of Host, Lost Garden, & Capital cities should be investigated. The proposal is to investigate a specific area of Glasgow, namely the stretch of Buchanan Street between the 2 underground stations, Buchanan and St. Enoch at opposite ends. Each "city" is to be presented in different styles, all based around recorded material. Photographs, a movie recording, an audio recording and a live narrative were selected as the means to present.

-The narrative for the Lost City was performed live-

Week 1 - To Play Manifesto - Live Performance

Last week the entire year received a presentation for all the tutors. They presented us with there individual manifestos for the coming project. We were then giving the opportunity to switch unit. I chose to remain in the same unit.

The tutors manifesto for the semester sees the project split into two. The first part is, using the theme of performance to investigate and develop a narrative proposal. The proposal will be tested by delivering and recording a live installation in the city. The second is to design a building or series of structures using conventional and non-conventional architectural techniques which relate to the investigated act.

Performance is a major theme of the project. To set the scene the entire year is asked to stage a live performance in unit groups to help understand the processes involved. The theme for each performance is "Utopian Dreams" The performance can be live or make use of pre-recorded material. Each performance is to last approximately 10 minutes.

To Play - Architecture Design Studio 3D

Hello and welcome.

I am a 3rd year Architecture student in Strathclyde University, Scotland. We have just completed our first semester which consisted of 3 design projects, along with class assignments. These projects were completed over a period of 14 weeks. They were as follows

  • 3A - 2's Company - A 4 week project to design 2 small houses with work space. This project was completed in pairs.
  • 3B - To Live/To Work, Masterplan.

  • 3C - To Live/To Work, Urban Housing. B+C formed one project derided in 2. The first part being an investigation into the nature of what it means to live and work in the urban realm leading to the second part, a detailed study and critical enquiry into the programmatic typology of urban housing. Part B was completed in groups of 4 while part C was an individual housing scheme.

All projects where based in Glasgow City. My tutors decided on themes at the beginning of semester 1 which ran through the initial projects and will continue through this one. The themes were assigns so as to keep a consistency through the 4 projects. We were asked to look at the city of Glasgow under 4 headings.

As part of this years final project, 3D - To Play, I have decided to record the design process by means of this blog. The project will run over a period of 16 weeks. During this time I hope to note all the key aspect of the design process, what direction I am going, and why I have chosen that route. My aim is to update as regularly as possible.
